This makes it easy to maintain the precise angle that is key to a razor sharp edge. Sharpening knives on bench stones requires using hand-eye coordination to maintain the same angle, which can be difficult or impossible. This device frees the user from this necessary skill and allows you to get the perfect sharpening every time. made of thick stainless steel with a thickness of exactly 2 mm. The thickness of the two sliding parts that hold the knife and scissors is 1.67 mm. Width 60 mm or 2.35 inches, length 8 inches. The total length of the stones is 6.25 inches (including the black plastic they are mounted on). The stones themselves measure 5.92 inches or 150mm and are 0.79 inches or 20mm wide. The overall thickness is 8.9mm and the stone itself is 5.17mm. I wish the stones were finer grained. The kit contains stones in 120, 320, 600, and 1500 grit. When sanding, I usually start at 3000 and then work my way up to 6000 or 8000 before finishing the leather. They're good for quickly "reprofiling" an edge and making it very sharp, but I'll probably look to thinner stones for this. Luckily, they're a pretty versatile size. The design of the sharpener itself is very good and the materials are top notch. There's nothing on the underside, though, so I'd put in some rubber or felt, or even hang a loop before using it on my pretty countertop. There are holes on all 4 corners, so you can also install it on a bench. There are no instructions, but looking at the pictures everything becomes clear. There is no mention of whether the 4 included stones are oil or water stones, but I guess that doesn't matter either. Either or neither will work. The liquid is only used to clean the cuttings. There are no marks or notches on the vertical angle adjustment post, so you need to adjust the angle by eye. I'm going to use a protractor and the edge of a file to make a few marks on the adjustment post for a "quick reference" for adjusting to different angles. To use the sharpener, simply lock the angle of the stone to match the angle of your blade. Then, using very light pressure, run the stone down the length of the blade and down the length of the stone. Start at one end of the blade and one end of the stone, and end each pass at the other end of both. Try to do 5 to 10 passes, then flip it over and do it on the other side. Rinse the chips under some water to get the stone clean and cut well. Pros+ Perfect system for people with no grinding experience or knowledge.+ Allows you to get a perfect edge in seconds every time.+ Thick stainless steel won't rust in my garage. No knives, cleavers and scissors. Cons - The stones have a very coarse grit - you will need to adjust the angle by eye as there are no marks or nicks.
