Installation Instructions - Which Filter Comes First - Testimonial

There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding the installation instructions for GE's FXSCV two-stage water filter kit. Here are my findings. Instructions: GE clearly indicates filter installation with a green cap on the left (inlet) side. see drawing. Weight: I weighed both filters, the green cap weighed 420 grams and the gray cap weighed 405 grams (4% difference). Cross section: I cut out the cross section of the two filters used. Both are dense carbon block material. Some in the reviews suggested the first filter was looser, but both are definitely dense carbon. Conclusion: While many on this forum disagree with GE's filter order (about half think GE's instructions are "wrong"). However, after doing this little research, I'm going to stick with GE's recommendation by default and install a green cap on the left (inlet) side and a gray filter on the right (outlet) side. This is what I did on a previous setup and pure tasting water for 6+ months. Note that the instructions say 15 minutes = 9 gallons before use. That sounds like a lot, but with a life goal of 600 gallons, I'm also following GE's directions and run at least 5 gallons before drinking water. Another tip, use a rubber mallet and the wrench provided to loosen the pot lids when removing them, as they can become stuck after a few months. Thanks for reading and good luck. — Steve from California.
