it is not actually a shelf but 3 metal parts and one must balance on the other two and not be touched. There is no direct connection between the 2 support brackets and the top, there are only 4 small tabs that stick out maybe 1/16" and there are slots on the "shelf" that these tabs align with, but the tiniest bump lifts you up instantly Mine was a little warped (I mean a little) so there were only 3 ledges.
