I've never used a solder pad before. That really simplifies the task. I like the different compartments to put your disassembled stuff in, especially the magnetic areas in the corners. The top of the mat also has tiny holes that you can insert sharp tools into. It also has 78 small, numbered pockets for small items and inch and centimeter ruler markings. Made of fairly thick silicone. The gray color feels more professional than other rugs and the price is lower than similar rugs. Highly recommended.
