The filter itself works well. It works on a very simple principle - so much so that some people wonder how these simple sponges, tubes and air bubbles actually filter water. However, this system works for both mechanical filtration (filtering dirt) and biological filtration (thanks to the beneficial bacteria that live in the sponge). However, due to the inverted L-shaped exhaust pipe, it produces bubble noise. But it can be removed, and the filter will still suck water through the sponges. If you need a simple filtration system, this is a very good option. You may want to check out the ATI Hydro Sponge Filters if you need an upright foam filter. I have used both elite sponge filters and hydro sponge filters. They all work fine. Hydrofilters are thicker but stand on the ground without suction cups. Elite filters are attached to the wall of the aquarium. If you clean the tank glass, the hydro will be lighter. However, if you want to use the entire space of the bottle (e.g. for plants), the elite sponge is more useful.
