Type of review

Let me start by saying that this is a good product. The picture is a bit misleading, at least for me it was. I ended up with twice as much as expected. I still put them in 1.5 gallon 360* tanks. If the size was in the description I would choose the smaller version.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons

Works well, poor suction cups

Good sponge filter that ensures excellent growth of beneficial bacteria. It has good bubble flow which is not too much for my female bettas. Unfortunately, the filter is not held by two suction cups, but pops out. I'll use some silicone to put it back together. Otherwise a good inexpensive product.

Pros
  • Inspires confidence
Cons
  • Negative impression

Does a great job at minimal cost

I ordered this when my blankets were giving me a lot of unexpected and unwanted roasts. I couldn't kill her so I had to do something to keep the water levels under control with an overflowing tank. So far it seems to have tolerated the usual toxins that fish deposit in the aquarium well, within safe limits. Even better, it's way cheaper than any other type of filter that could do the job.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Definitely bad product

Although these filters work, they have a fatal design.

Although these filters work, they have a serious design flaw: the hole through which air enters the main vertical tube is blocked by a tee at the base, resulting in uneven and noisy airflow. I cut a hole in the connector with a knife to allow air to enter directly. I replaced all 12 of these filters with another brand that doesn't have this design issue. Two stars because they really work, just inefficiently or quietly.

Pros
  • weight
Cons
  • boring packaging

Ideal for low tech aquariums

I recently built a low tech 10 gallon planted aquarium. Since I didn't want to use a cooktop or canister filter, it was perfect for the 10 gallon. As others have said, it gets pretty noisy. I added about 6 inches of clear tubing purchased from a local hardware store. With a tube end approximately 3 inches below the waterline, this elite foam filter is 90% quiet. I also added an adjustable valve to the channel so I could control the amount of "flow" on this filter. All in all I would buy again.

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Hard to say

Functional but noisy

The filter itself works well. It works on a very simple principle - so much so that some people wonder how these simple sponges, tubes and air bubbles actually filter water. However, this system works for both mechanical filtration (filtering dirt) and biological filtration (thanks to the beneficial bacteria that live in the sponge). However, due to the inverted L-shaped exhaust pipe, it produces bubble noise. But it can be removed, and the filter will still suck water through the sponges. If…
