I had my teenage son test these glowsticks and he broke one to activate it at 4pm (insert eye rolls). Even though it was midday and relatively bright outside, the glowstick was actually very bright and I could see the light it was putting out in our kitchen, casting shadows on nearby objects. In the evening I checked regularly to see if it was still glowing. The glow stick lasted 12 hours (yes I told my son to check it at 4am) but the brightness faded quickly and at 12pm I had to tape it under my desk to really see if it was still glowing . If I were to use this during a power outage there would be so much ambient light and the glow stick could be effective for things like reading. That being said, you probably won't need a glowstick for the full 12 hours in an emergency or when camping. I was disappointed with the rapid decrease in light output, but thinking about how I would use it, I probably left it running at dusk to do any tasks I needed to do, and then as evening came, I needed less light. In the middle of the night my eyes adjusted completely and I could only use them to look around or check the time.
