Review on Focal Sphear High Definition Earphones Black by Rebecca Bright

Insider tip: in-ear headphones

I've known Focal as a manufacturer of loudspeakers and drivers for decades and have heard them a few times at trade shows and audiophile meetings, but the relative lack of distribution has kept them from ever making it to local retailers. Their foray into headphones garnered rave reviews internationally, but for the most part, the attention-grabbing products have been extremely expensive, high-end exotics like the $4,000 Utopia. When I saw them releasing affordable IEMs I was curious if they could make affordable headphones with the same sonic heritage. To answer my own question, yes they can, quite brilliantly. The Focal Sphear are some of the most comfortable headphones I've ever owned, not only in terms of fit and feel, but in terms of sound. Focal Spear is one of the best sounding and balanced audio products I have ever heard. It is perfectly closed from the bass to the treble, with no annoying colorations or weaknesses across the entire spectrum. This is one of the most natural and least mechanical sounding audio devices I've come across. As for the flaws, there's a slight lack of air at very high frequencies and too much warmth at low frequencies, but these flaws are most apparent on first listen. In just four days of listening, both ends of the spectrum have been expanded and more controlled. I have had many headphones including Ultimate Ears Triple Fi Pro, Sennheiser IE8, Sony etc but these are the best I have ever used. today. For the price, they simply can't be beat.
