Review on Seachem Marine Buffer 250g by Stephanie Jonsson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

In freshwater aquariums, it is best to raise the pH.

I've found that it's best to raise the pH in freshwater tanks that have gotten too low. I have had many freshwater aquariums and am a fish biologist with 40 years of experience raising tropical and native freshwater fish. Any decomposing material ie plant matter, waste etc will lower the pH of your aquarium. Even when changing the water, it is not enough to raise the pH value back to at least 7. There is always some fish droppings etc. left in gravel, nooks and crannies, which lowers the pH of the water to 4-5, such as Low pH causes the fish's tails to be pinched and the fish to become lethargic. I use 1/4 teaspoon of this powder for every 5 gallons of aquarium water in my tank. Mix the powder with water in a small glass and pour into the fish tank, then stir it in the fish tank after everything is dissolved (wait), then check the pH in the fish tank. If the pH is still below 6, add an additional 1/4 teaspoon per 5 gallons. If your pH was very low, adding this product will make the water very cloudy, but the fish tolerate it well, increase the pH to 7. If you add too much of this and the pH of your freshwater aquarium is above 8 .5 increases, this high pH is higher. In the end, your freshwater fish will be killed. So if you find yourself accidentally raising it above 8.3, drain any white powder you find in the tank and do large water changes to bring the pH back below 8.
