I used this item to hook a vertical wire mesh gate post. There was no separate plate to attach to the magnet, only the stand itself (which seemed quite sensitive to the magnet). The longitudinal direction of the magnet was perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the post (post diameter was 1.5 inches). This means that the alignment is gentle (e.g. if the gate moves slightly). The magnet gripped well enough (barely) but to do it again I would use the 50lb version of this product. Placing a second 20lb magnet next to the first with adjacent long sides didn't help in either the 0 version or the 180 degree version - there must be some compensation for the magnetic fields associated with close placement . The exposed edges of the magnet seem to rust a bit in the rain, but so far it hasn't really affected the gate's latching ability. A magnetic latch like this really solved my problem of my previous regular mechanical gate post latch getting stuck and making it difficult to use.
