Everything was exactly as described. It expands to a full four inches. I ordered a double size after evaluating all types of large dog beds - they're expensive, especially if you're looking for orthopedic support for aging dogs. So, instead of spending $300 on an LL Bean (yes, that's the cost of a top-of-the-line orthopedic XL Basic bed), I bought this double size for $75 and a cover for about $40. The topper arrived yesterday and I was thrilled. so it doesn't smell. It was compressed and had to be carefully cut out of the packaging, but stretched easily on the dining table to allow for expansion. It fully expanded in about 15 minutes so I measured my pup's current bed and cut out the top for bed number one. Fits perfectly in his old bedspread! I was surprised that the foam is so easy to cut. It was a little tricky - it's four inches tall, but overall it's not that hard to take it a bit at a time. I am now awaiting delivery of the slipcover I ordered from Revain so I can make a second bed. I'll have some left over and maybe I can make some kind of pillow out of the leftover foam. Who knows? So, for a little over $100, I have two dog beds made out of eggcrate memory foam that's both firm and soft. My 90 lb Chocolate Labrador Retriever loves it! He's 13 and when he tried this yesterday he just fell, stretched and slept so well. I hope this helps him as he gets more and more restless at night on his old bed. I am really impressed with the quality of this foam topper. I have no idea about the human bed review but this was a great buy for a homemade dog bed.
