Review on Alxum Dual Bay M.2 NVMe Docking Station with Offline Clone Function, Trim and UASP Support | 2242 2260 2280 M.2 SSDs | Tool-Free Installation and up to 10Gbps Speeds by Tina Stamey

Convenient dual NVMe bay, but cloning speed is slow and gets very hot.

The Alxum Dual Bay NVMe Dock is very convenient to use with it to increase storage capacity or clone one NVMe SSD to another. The tool-free box includes USB Type-C, USB Type-A, and USB Type-C to USB Type-C cables. Also included are a 12V 2A power adapter, 2 aluminum heatsinks, and 2 thermal pads. In the Windows 10 speed test, the read speed reached 1025 MB/s and the write speed reached 998 MB/s. The Macbook Pro reached a read speed of 928 MB/s and a write speed of 860 MB/s. Transferring 90.2 GB of data from drive A to drive B took 8 minutes and 21 seconds at an average transfer rate of 180 MB/s. There was a brief speed peak of up to 400 MB/s when transferring data. Cloning an NVMe SSD is easy and convenient. Just press the button and wait, wait and wait some more for the cloning process to complete. No computer or software is required during the cloning process, but the cloning process is not as fast as the data transfer. The Alxum Dual Bay NVMe Docking Station took 1 hour and 16 minutes to clone a 500GB SSD to a 512GB SSD with 90.2GB of data. .It only took 6 minutes to clone the same drive on computer. Opening the case, installing SSDs and running the cloning software added just over 2 minutes, a total of 8 minutes 22 seconds, almost 10 times faster. Cloning the same drive with Alxum's 2 drive bay and USB clone software also takes 14 minutes. So standalone cloning isn't the Alxum's two-bay forte, as the SATA hard drive dock can clone hard drives at about the same speed. The device does have a fan, but placing it on the bottom doesn't help to cool the SSD from above. SSDs have reached temperatures in excess of 78°C in just a few minutes of use. Also, the fan vent is blocked by a metal cover, and hot air easily circulates inside the device. I recommend using the device without a cover so that the SSDs do not get hotter than 70°C and do not slow down the data transfer rate. A similar dual NVMe bay that's smaller, all-metal inside and out, and isn't a fan costs less and dissipates heat better. Alxum Dual Bay NVMe docking station is very convenient when copying and transferring data or backing up data or your mobile device. . High temperatures can affect the performance of the device. Drives used in the chassis. SK Hynix 500 GB at 3500 MB/s reading and 3100 MB/s writing KLEVV 512 GB at 2050 MB/s reading and 1650 MB/s writing AMD system with ASRock B550 Steel Legend MacBook Pro 2017
