The mug was boxed and was one piece. All I had to do was put small pieces on top when I wanted to use them or I could store them in the bottom of the cup. The product video was very helpful and showed that it works very well. It accommodates larger diameter cups that won't fit in a regular cup holder, such as yetis, glasses, coffee mugs with handles. It fits in my Lincoln cup holders front and back. It fits in my Ford's front and rear cup holders. I wanted to keep my cell phone and my snacks. The only downside I would give is that it doesn't hold smaller cylinders very well. They rock too much even with the pieces added on top to hold them. It's just easier to use the built-in cup holder in the car. Then when I pulled the cup out I had to put it somewhere and it's quite big - I also lost small parts somewhere in the car.
