Review on Canon PowerShot ELPH 160 (White) by Drew Gengler

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great little entry-level camera

Just starting out in photography and want a camera with a good name and reputation? That's all. I've been a die-hard Canon fan for over 30 years. For a point and shoot pocket camera I prefer the SX series over the ELPH, but the ELPH series is great for those who are just starting out and don't want to mess with changing settings etc. I might be an exception to this list. Typically, I started with a DSLR when I was in high school and then switched to a pocket camera that was easy to carry. (Note: the DSLR wasn't a typo. I started shooting when we needed to use real FILM... I had my first digital camera in the mid 90's and it was horrible. No flash and I think it was 1MP ha ha ha Times have definitely changed in the world of digital cameras!) I bought this particular camera used. The seller honestly said that the shutter cover didn't close completely. But Canon for less than $20 for my teenage son to start shooting was a risky proposition that I just had to do. As I always use Canon I know they are built for quality. Your reputation has a reason. they do good things. When I received the camera I found that there was a very small dent on the front. Obviously the camera was hit or crushed by someone who owned it before me. The dent prevented the shutter cover from closing. I just pulled the dent out a bit (I have steady hands and am used to working with very small things because I make jewelry) and the clasp cover works great. I have tested it many times and now the lid works perfectly. Aside from a small notch showing where the camera hits, everything works flawlessly as intended. A perfect example of Canon quality and why I've been a fan for so long and always will be. Please excuse the bad camera quality lol. Strangely I didn't use a good camera to take the picture, I used my phone's camera which isn't a very good quality. Anyway, you get the idea.

Pros
  • Great all-round performance
Cons
  • Empty

Poor at focusing. Poor battery life. Decent pictures when it works.
