I had two goals with this purchase: 1) to provide emergency air conditioning for our home's air conditioning system in the event of a failure (a friend had to wait 5 days for repairs in a sweltering hole) and 2 ) appreciate only cooling our bedroom at night, not the whole house. It's a semi-portable device (it's heavy, so climbing stairs is quite difficult) and can be installed on different types of windows. We installed it in our bedroom. We keep 75 or 76 at home during the day but always reduce it to 70 or 69 for sleeping. Now we won't touch the main thermostat, just turn on the portable air conditioner in our master bedroom. It cools the room quickly, is not too loud and is economical. The documentation is generally clear, but there is one feature it didn't mention - the device has the ability to "pivot" the exhaust port. This wave-like movement is only controlled by the remote control. I spent a lot of time figuring out how to do this from the base unit, but found I had to use the remote to turn it on or off. We also found that Mode=Cool and Fan=Slow worked better for us than Mode=Auto. We didn't use it to cool the entire lower floor, as if our central air conditioning had ever failed, but I suspect it would reduce any high temperatures, which is what we wanted. All in all it was a good buy for us.
