Review on Auto-Vox Solar Wireless Backup Camera: Easy 5-Minute DIY Installation with HD Monitor and Waterproof Rear View Camera for Truck, Car, RV by Bret Wong

Good system, great customer support

We have both the original and the new improved rear view camera system. The main differences are that the remote button to turn on the camera is now integrated into the power supply and the display is better. Since the camera button is integrated into the power supply, there is no need for an additional button with its own battery. While the display and camera specs in the manual are the same for the two systems, I have a feeling the display is better on the new system. Colors are brighter, more vibrant and images appear sharper. Installation was easy, it took some time to hide the cable from the power supply to the monitor; the wire is quite long. Our cars are garaged so they don't get enough sunlight to charge the solar panels, and we have to plug into a wall charger every six or seven weeks. Due to the position of the bumper and license plate on our vehicles, it was difficult to open the charge port cover without removing the license plate. The new system includes a blue plastic piece shaped like a guitar that fits into the gap between the charging port cover and the opening, making the process fairly easy. We had the old system for over a year, the new one not that long ago, but we are happy with both systems, they help with backups. There is no audible signal when something is behind the car, only a visual one, so you need to pay attention to the display. We had a problem with one of the devices, the solar panel was dead after a few days and even with the charger. The battery could not be fully charged. I contacted support via email, got a response the next day, and had the unit replaced within days. Good service. A few "user" observations: 1. In one of our cars, the "cigarette lighter" or 12 volt power source is always on, even with the ignition off and the key removed. In this situation, the reverse display is always on; it doesn't display anything but turns on to receive the camera signal when the camera is turned on. If the car is not used for a few weeks, the current drawn by the display will completely drain the car battery. It is recommended to disconnect the monitor from the 12 volt source.2. The included monitor mount is great for a windshield or other smooth glass, e.g. B. a surface mount, but can detach and fall off when mounted on a dashboard or other non-glass surfaces, especially when the car is in the sun. To fix this situation, I bought car air vent phone holder, replaced the phone holder part with a backup display mounting plate, and securely installed the air vent holder's display to the center air vent of the car. Please note that the phone holders on the air vents do not fit all vehicles, they do not fit round air vents.

Pros
  • Powered by the sun: Solar1 maintains its charge using sunlight. You only need to charge it once a year with 30 minutes of sufficient sun exposure per day. Even during the rainy season, a fully charged battery lasts 2 months with average usage (2-3 times a day).
Cons
  • There are nuances
