Big and cheap. Recommended, but expect economy-level performance and TLC durability. Recommended

My needs are a bit unusual as I need a high capacity temporary hard drive that isn't designed to hold data beyond a few days. Before SSDs dropped to their current price, I used 4 x 512GB Plextor drives in a striped RAID 0 array. Despite the shortcomings of this configuration, SSDs were at least MLCs. When I hit the write endurance limit on one or more SSDs, it was time to figure out what my replacement strategy would be. Login to SanDisk Ultra 2TB 3D SSD. It really doesn't get any simpler than this drive. No bracket, no mini CD, no cloning software. You really only get a floppy disk and a few minimal bits of documentation. It all makes sense as this is indeed one of the cheapest large SSDs out there. Like most drives of this size, this device uses TLC flash memory. TLC is the worst material in terms of durability, but it's cheap to manufacture. This is not published on the Revain product page, but a 2TB unit has a lifespan of 500TBW. If the durability estimate is correct, the drive should last me around 18 months (which is good enough for the price). You can download the SanDisk utility (screenshot included with this review) to check the device's vital signs and take the guesswork out of estimating remaining drive life. In terms of performance, the drive is okay. That's a lot faster than a magnetic drive, but pretty slow for an SSD. Expect 85-90% performance from a high-end SATA SSD (you really should use NVMe if you need speed). However, if you need a cheap SSD to store large amounts of data, you can fare significantly worse.

Pros
  • Speed up your PC for faster boot-ups and blazing fast games and graphics
Cons
  • Out of fashion
