This machine is the coolest! I was looking for something inexpensive to record and play short jam sessions with friends. We mainly play congas, harmonica, clarinet, percussion etc so I can't vouch for the loud electric guitar recording. Also, for a few hundred dollars, you can buy a good digital recorder that no doubt sounds better, but works great for less than $60. First, when recording, I plug a microphone into the microphone jack (should be a mini plug). This added richness to the recordings (the internal mics were fine - just a little tinny). Second, for playback, I plugged the mini-plug into the headphone jack on the recording device, and then plugged it into my aux input on my stereo. You can't listen to the internal speaker satisfactorily, so for music it's important to have some sort of power/speaker situation. It's so easy to use and actually sounds quite respectable when played back (make sure the volume on the recorder itself is turned up). Accessing past jams is like browsing a full Tivo - very easy! I can't believe Olympus isn't marketing this as a simple music recorder. That's the biggest secret they have.
