For a long time my wife and I washed all the dishes by hand and used the dishwasher as a dryer because the shelves were rusty. If we ran the dishwasher the rust would transfer to the plates but there was no such problem when washing by hand. Well, we got lazy and let the soaking plates pile up in the sink enough that I borrowed a free dishwasher (same brand, similar model) from someone online. I thought the racks would slide in and boom and you were done. There is no such happiness. So after some research I bought these tips and some coating for other rusty parts. After about $20 or so we have a fully working dishwasher and to date no rust! I'm glad we took the plunge and fixed our old devices instead of throwing them away.
