In cold weather, when you're most likely to use them, they start out so cold that most of the heat from the chemical reaction is used to heat up the gel itself, rather than warming up your hands. To get the most out of it, I recommend warming it up in hot water before leaving. It will hold that heat for a good 30-60 minutes before it gets too cold anyway to make much of a difference if kept in a jacket pocket or similar. In most cases, a higher hot water temperature is sufficient. definitely for the first hour. I usually wear it around my neck and hold it in place with a respirator strap. As it starts to cool a bit, I open the metal disc and it starts to get cloudy. However, because it starts out much hotter than air temp, it doesn't immediately turn into a harder consistency with almost ready heat release. It stays much more flexible and MUCH hotter for MUCH longer. Hopefully this suggestion will help someone else to use them a little longer (unless you are perfectly happy with the standard chemical reaction duration like room temperature). in cold weather). stay warm
