This device is powered by two LR 44 cells connected in parallel, one fitted upside down and the other shorted. So one cell is at 1.5V and the other is at 0. I threw away the 0V cell and started it with 1 cell. The batteries themselves look super cheap and one was slightly rusty. There is no "custom" way to get from C to F, but some have posted hacks. The device is designed for panel mounting. There is also no on/off switch, so the device is designed to show the temperature throughout the life of the batteries (batteries in my case). I use it to control the temperature in my 3D printer's print chamber and it works great for that.
