Review on 18 TB External HDD Western Digital WD Elements Desktop, USB 3.0, black by Adam Kotula ᠌

A complete disaster, definitely did not pass the quality check!!!

My old 2TB disk crashed on the same day I managed to dump my whole media collection, so I bought an identical disk with a built-in player thinking that WD rehabilitated itself for over 3 months of the purchased disk. Some of the photos were saved in a backup copy, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it wasn't the disk itself that failed and not the controller. I have, in fact, been a video collector for quite some time. After years of using computers, I still don't trust WD. However, I needed a disk immediately, and the only brand available at the store was WD. Even if WD honors the promise, I may have thrown out the package too late. Yet for some reason, I wasn't too concerned with the check's security. Considering the media's original release date, I'm hoping they'll agree. The quality of warranty servicing is at an all-time low. There's a note on the desk that says "DO NOT call the store in the event of problems; instead, register an application with them to obtain an RMA number and return the defective disk by mail." There is a discrepancy between the information on the webpage and what is actually happening, as registration closes upon the selection of a distributor in 2022 without issuing an RMA number and distributors either do not respond to messages and calls or forward them to the store. The store's administrator deserves extra recognition for replacing the hard disk on the spot (without a receipt, they located information on the estimated date of purchase). Yet, you have no desire to save any data on such a hard disk except as a backup. A RAID array with two mirrored disks is something everyone should seriously consider investing in. Losing data can be very distressing.

Pros
  • inaudible at high volume
Cons
  • large, requiring an additional power source. After three months of effort, Zdoh mysteriously disappeared from the system while recording data (with an error message stating that further recording was impossible) and hasn't been seen since. After 10 minutes of being plugged into a USB port and doing absolutely nothing, a disk showing a size of 0 bytes will appear.
