I live in Northern California and rarely need a heavy coat or jacket every day, but my favorite time to travel is in the winter - snow, rain, cold - take it with you! I have an upcoming trip and I know it will be around 40 degrees during the day, 30 degrees at night and possibly rain and wind. You can do anything with the right clothes, so I started looking. First coat test: I LOVE the North Face Outer Boroughs jacket - so well designed but very expensive, very heavy and probably overkill for my trip - this jacket is probably best for those of you living in Minnesota/North Dakota/Wisconsin /Canada living shoves snow every day or just loves to wallow in your beautiful snow. Pockets and lack of options to tighten the waist. It's just okay. Then I tried this Columbia Carson Pass Interchange Jacket and it's perfect! I have all the pockets and a small waist, a comfortable fit like the North Face OB but not as heavy. I was really toasted within minutes of putting my house in with the thermal inner workings and I love that you can actually remove the liner. It's also a lot cheaper than North Face. Winter can't come soon enough, damn California weather.
