All "evaporative coolers" work by adding extra moisture to the air. This extra moisture from the ice and water you load into this unit will evaporate and effectively cool a small area EXCEPT and ONLY when the air in your location is not humid. But if you live where the average humidity is already over 50%, this device doesn't cool any better than a small fan. In fact, adding extra moisture can increase the "moss" feel in high humidity areas. To recap, if like me you live in a place with low average humidity (Colorado), this will cool a small area. If you live in high humidity areas like Seattle or Florida, these and all evaporative coolers won't work for you. Hope that helps.
