When seat foam is compressed I find it more uncomfortable than unpadded wood chairs because they have a contoured wood seat while task chairs have flat wood under the foam I found an inch and a half piece of styrofoam, removed the seat of the chair, circled it to size, then simply cut the XPS (styrofoam) to size with a jigsaw. I then simply placed this additional cushion directly over the seat of my work chair and can now sit comfortably in the chair for a long time. under the existing foam, then stretch the fabric over the seat and staple it to the underside, but haven't done it yet. My temporary cure is still working. It's just that the styrofoam I found was black so it looks pretty much the same, just adds a bit of height. Actually I think one inch would be enough. If you're unfamiliar with Styrofoam, it's tougher than the soft foam commonly used in seat cushions, but compresses the top. Thing is, it only compresses about half an inch due to the added rigidity, so you don't sink to the bottom.
