Make sure your system can handle a high MERV filter pressure drop

My house was new in May 2019. The builder supplied a #210 MERV-11 filter. In January 2020, when a family member developed a health issue that could be caused by allergens, I switched to a #216 MERV-16 filter. Although we didn't notice any difference in air quality, I liked knowing that the filter was removing more particles from the air. I changed them every 4 months and everything seemed fine. Then, when the polar vortex hit us in suburban Austin, Texas last week, our system struggled to keep up as it was unable to maintain the set temperature. I thought the size of the stove was not designed for the intense cold we were experiencing. Then I realized that the oven turns off every 60-90 minutes. After turning it off, the T-Stat still needs heat, but the oven won't start again until I restart it by flipping the switch. For 4 nights I set an hourly alarm to wake up and see if the oven needed to be restarted. When I was finally able to contact our HVAC company, they first asked if our filter was dirty. When I told them that I had just replaced my allergen filter in January, they immediately advised me to remove the filter. Everything worked both without a filter and with the MERV-11 filter. At 16 the airflow was obstructed and the air exiting the heating element was hot enough to cause a safety shutdown after 60-90 minutes. Received on 12/20/2020. The return period ended on 01/31/2021 and our problem started on 02/14/2021.
