This allowed me to take the laptop's HD and drag the files from there to another PC with a USB port. It doesn't allow you to take Windows OS and install it on another computer, in other words, it doesn't allow you to clone. Other software or hardware may be suitable. I dont know. What it allowed was extracting user files from an old laptop that had other hardware issues to render it useless for recovering files from a broken computer but with a fully functional SATA hard drive. The broken computer was an HP laptop. (On the other hand, I wasn't overly impressed with HP laptops. It was the second laptop I had to give up. I won't be buying another HP laptop. They aren't meant to be user serviced. The first one got very hot even through the plastic cover which i had to put wet paper towels in to avoid burning my wrists while typing on the keyboard, i even opened it twice and cleaned the accumulated dust around the fan before giving in. the second had the hinge broken and the plastic case was falling apart to the point where the video cable popped out and the screen had to be propped up with an accountant to use it, so I removed the hard drive from the second computer and used the key to extract it the files from it.)
