Review on Black Replacement Spout Kit for Midwest Can 4240 - 1 Pack by Philip Latham

Revainrating 5 out of 5

And finally, a functional spout

This Midwest Can spout should have taken care of its gas and diesel jugs from the start. While it's not perfect, it's a big improvement. They should, but don't seem to be offering them as free replacements for the awful original spouts. The original spouts had too many problems to list. Perhaps most notably, they poured the fuel very slowly. When I timed it, it took me 7 minutes and 58 seconds to pour 5 gallons with the original spout. This new design used the same 5 gallons in 2 minutes and 25 seconds, beating the packaging's claim that it was "up to 2.5 times faster". I would like to see even faster times, but I can live with that. There is a red safety latch that needs to be pushed in to get the fuel going. At least when it's new, it's easy to depress and stays in the unlocked position. If this ever becomes a problem, it looks like it will be easy to pry off with a screwdriver. It also seems like it would be easy to drill out the part of the nose that seals to prevent fuel flow. I have some units with fuel tanks that don't easily get caught on the hooks on the spouts and this might be a way to top off fuel by simply inverting the canister. Think carefully before doing this yourself. Perhaps my biggest criticism has to do with the so-called spout cover. While it's possible to attach it to the end of the spout, it's easy to knock off, allowing dirt to enter the spout and then overflow into the fuel tank. I thought I could use the lids from my old Blitz cans but they are too loose. I would deduct 1/2 a star for the flimsy lid design if I could. be burdened with features that affect functionality in the interests of safety and CARB compliance. In many cases, these properties make spouts more dangerous and prone to spills. This is the first gas whistle I've found in years that I can endorse.
