The bottom of the holder only wears out when inserting ink sticks uncapped or in the extended position. Mechanical pencils will only fit and not damage the holder if you move the lead away. My very first one lasted 3 years following these rules. Then I started carrying ink sticks that popped out and kept forgetting to put them away. My second lasted 2 years as it was quickly ruined by metal tipped mechanical pencils, particularly Alvin Drafting mechanical pencils. But think about it, this holder will wear out if worn 5 days a week for 50 weeks (assuming a 2 week break). Especially if you wear them while crawling, climbing or hard pushing at work. Otherwise I love her. They are big enough to hold sharp objects and have a hidden pocket inside. Which I use to use a small, thin pocket knife to open letters and boxes. People notice and I say yes, that's my pocket protector. Colleagues know you have a pen/pencil, which usually means at least one person takes the pen/pencil out of the holder without being asked. My advice, buy two.
