Bought the iRobot 805 from a warehouse store for an instant $50 discount upon sign-up. I studied them before the holidays and was amazed by the variety of options, models and the large price range that came with it. Did I need $200 or $900? In the end after reading the reviews I decided it just wasn't for me and moved on. Then I happened to walk by this $50 display case and made an impulse purchase for a Christmas present, believing that if that didn't work out I would take advantage of the warehouse's very generous return policy. Heck, a pretty high-end model at a low budget price? I love these offers! We won't be back because we love it! I strongly recommend reading several reviews for different models. This allows you to quickly set more realistic expectations about what this thing can and can't do. We use virtual walls and they are effective. They're usually designed to keep "Dobby" (yes, you should call him) confined to the living room and adjoining kitchen. Access to other parts of the house is blocked because the passageways in the hallway are provided with a virtual barrier that protects Dobby from pranks that are too nasty. When we're ready to clear those areas, we simply move the wall's virtual barriers to restrict them elsewhere. Impressions: The novelty of the cleaning robot makes it attractive and interesting to look at! I'm sure that will pass sooner or later, but goofy grins appear on our faces as we watch this thing roll along, sucking up dust and dirt. It works surprisingly well - just forget about figuring out a pattern. It's a random pattern that does the job. You can't say it's inefficient - yes, you can always run the vacuum cleaner yourself, probably faster. But now you can do something else while the room is being cleaned. Good to know that this is done without having to pull out the vacuum, unwind the cord and sweep the floor. The dust container must be cleaned after each use. Don't give it too many tasks - start with one or two rooms and expand, adding one more room at a time, until you find one that suits you. It's easy to pick up virtual blockage walls and confine them to a new part of the house. Pick up things off the floor that you don't want Roomba to pick up or carry around. Because it will. It's as simple as (for us) picking up our home phone's flimsy power cord off the floor and temporarily moving the power strip out of the way. Of course, picking up a pillow, piece of clothing, or a child's toy off the floor comes naturally. Dobby has encountered lamp cords and the like, but seems to free himself without unplugging or sucking them up. It closes in the bathroom or toilet if you just open the door. Either close it to keep it out or leave it open so it doesn't close. Not too hard! Also, I've seen reviews complaining that they expect this to "map" their floors. I see the super top model making that claim, but nowhere do I see a description of the 805 making that claim. Reading the reviews will give you a really good idea of what to expect. Take the time to read many of these and it will help you decide if locking yourself in the bathroom or sucking up a USB cable can handle this thing. I find that these frustrations can easily be avoided by quickly clearing the area first. This will result in a successful cleanup. By sweeping I mean going through the area visually and placing things out of reach that you don't want the vacuum to collide with. I am very happy with the amount of dirt and dust that Dobby collects. We have run it 5 times since Christmas and each time the bin has been full. That's the main reason I'm so happy with it - it seems to pick up dust and dirt really well. Full ground coverage is good. It does a good job of navigating under, around and through chair legs etc. Ours hasn't stuck or glued yet, but that's because we go through it quickly before letting it loose on any area. It works equally well on our carpets, tile floors and hardwood floors. He will come across things. Sometimes it's a very soft, gentle nudge, and other times the chair legs hit a little harder. I've read of people putting a pad on the front edge of the device. I understand why, but we don't intend to do that. To this day I haven't noticed it leaving marks on the chair legs or causing any damage to the furniture. However, we do not live in a museum. We have two young children and most of our stuff can take a beating from Dobby. Perhaps he could knock over a tall vase when it was placed on a tall, small-diameter round table. But knowing this, I would just temporarily place the vase on another surface and this problem would be solved. That's all the pre-planning effort you need to put into cleaning with the iRobot Roomba 805 to give you the satisfaction and success you hope it will bring you.
