My law firm has a gas water heater and this alarm is placed on the floor about 9 inches from the base of the water heater to detect any leaks that may develop. Works with a 19 volt battery. It has 2 metal bars running along the outside of the case and if water touches the metal bars as water conducts electricity an alarm will go off. I wish the alarm was louder but this is the loudest I've found and it's loud enough that we can hear it when it goes off. If you use this type of alarm in a remote place that is not normally manned, such as B. a basement or garage, I would recommend that you do not buy this device and instead buy one of the more expensive devices that have a sensor in a less remote location. Areas of your home with much louder alarms. Remember that any alarm is useless if given but not heard. But this signaling suits us, since the water heater for my office is in a closet off the main hall, which is often walked around. Very happy with it. By the way, we tested it by simply placing it under the bathroom faucet and running some water over it.
