Review on Gouache Carrying Students Watercolor Painting Painting, Drawing & Art Supplies by Lori Aguirre

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Very funny and economical gouache!

later This color set is really unusual but I'm really starting to like it. I am a professional artist with a higher education (with a degree in painting). I've recently started surface design and most of the work ends with scanning. I have taken color theory classes and this review is for those looking for a professional quality gouache kit. I like the value presented here. At the time of creating this set, each color costs about a dollar. This is a crazy deal! In the past I've mostly used Windsor and Newton gouache, which cost around $20 a tube. In addition, each of these compartments contains more paint than a tube of W&N. So this set needed a little more than a tube of paint. I'm very glad about that. Is it the same quality as Windsor and Newton? no Blending isn't as consistent and predictable, and the pigments are weaker. But to be honest, it's a great compromise for me. You can still make beautiful and vibrant paintings with this paint, it's just important to remember which colors are more opaque and which are more transparent or translucent. I went ahead and made samples of each color for this review. I have black stripes on each color to give you an idea of how transparent or opaque each color is - whether the color can mask the black. I also added water to thin it so you can see how the colors look with a great watercolor feel. The primary colors with the worst covering power are oranges. However, adding some white to them makes them thicker and more opaque. This set also applies beautifully on its own, so I don't mind if I have to apply a second coat of four colors. Most of the time I'll mix even more opaque colors with it - I assume most artists feel the same way. This color is thirsty! He loves water and I was very impressed with how much water he can handle while still being opaque. I personally would not use this color to imitate watercolor as watercolor runs a lot and this color stays in place. This is perfectly normal, this is a feature, not a gouache bug. Expect to use a lot of water with this set! I heard someone say on YouTube that this kit comes with a distilled water spray bottle and they spray it before sealing it. I think it's a fantastic idea but I haven't made it yet and simply sealing this set with the palette provided makes a pretty tight seal that never dried out. I am very impressed and have never seen a paint set react like this. I would compare the lid to a Tupperware lid - it snaps into place. Don't forget to also include a white mixing palette for a good seal. I thought that a ton of paint might spill onto the palette when I close the lid, but for some reason this actually didn't happen. This is certainly a technical feat. Compared to other sets of this gouache on Revain, I chose this one specifically for the white blending palette. I would prefer to only mix on white or gray. And the mint green case is really cute, with a nice velvety texture on the box that makes me want to use it every time. I have also included some photos of the painting I made with this set. I was disappointed not knowing what this set looked like up close from other reviews so I hope this helps. One shows a light table with color, others are close-ups to get an idea of the thickness and texture of the surface, and finally a scan. It is very important to me that the ink dries fairly evenly so that it can be scanned well. That's why I've also included a scan of the painting with these images so you can get an idea of what it looks like. I'm a perfectionist and I can live with that. I recommend you to use hot pressed watercolor paper or bristol paper with this paint. I hope this helps anyone considering this set. I look forward to continuing to use it in my work.
