Got this for my daughter when she went to college. It's comfortable for snuggling and can be used as a pillow when you're reading and need some extra buoyancy. Pretty comfortable to hold on to while sleeping. The fabric isn't soft, but I don't think it's rough. It just looks like a sweater. I wash it as if I'm putting it in a pillowcase with a hair tie around the opening of the cover and dry it the same way. I've never had any problems, it's holding up well. Have had us for 2 years. It will be a wonderful decoration of the bed along with other pillows. I don't know what I would give to a young child, they can easily become addicted, but if they are not playing with it but just snuggling with it then go for it, it's nice and thick and it comes with a lovely poem. and a gift box.
