I don't mind buying them for my Fluval High filter!
I use my Fluval U2 in a 10 gallon aquarium where I keep a 6 month old red-eared slider. I change the pads every 3-4 weeks, it was necessary more often, but I got by with such an interval. I'm sure I can rinse out the foam pad and put it back in the filter with the Red Ear slider (they aren't as delicate as fish) but I don't want to risk it.
