Received my 12 egg cooker today and tried it after washing with soap and water. If the cord seems too short, as some reviewers have complained, flip the base over and you'll find the cord is wrapped around the holder. Unwrap the cable and voila, you now have a 2 foot cable. The instruction manual says to pierce the big end of the egg but doesn't say why. So I pierced 4 eggs from the big end and 2 eggs from the small end to see what would happen. I booted up the machine as instructed and turned on the device. Eggs punctured at the narrow end were found to have a small amount of albumen oozing out of the hole and down the egg, while eggs punctured at the wide end showed only a depression of steamed albumen. When the buzzer sounded (more like a fire alarm) and the power light went out, I dunked the steamed eggs in a bowl of ice water for 3 minutes. The hotplate had an odd smell and small-ended eggs were found to be seeping into the water, which was white enough to burn the now-dry plate. Not much smell and no real problem but I will pierce any future eggs on the broad end! The heating plate was easy to clean with a damp paper towel. Tried the egg and it was very easy to peel and the egg white didn't have the rubbery texture of a boiled egg. Great little device!
