They have a thin sole that holds children's feet well. Most shoes, especially hiking shoes, are overly padded or too stiff, weakening the foot muscles. The outsole provides ample protection to ward off sharp rocks or pointed sticks. The sole is non-slip and the upper material is breathable. They worked well for waking up to rocks and mud. We have used them on several hikes, trips to the park, jog rides. You sit well. It's tight, but not tight. The upper has some stretch to aid in the fit. We bought them a size up as he wears them with socks. You look great too.
