Review on 11430 Custom Class Trailer Receiver by Robert Johnson

It just works well

perfectly matched to the vehicle. This will be my 5th Curt clutch installation and has been the most labor intensive. It's not the design's fault - blame GM for how they built this car. The tow bar requires 6 holes to be drilled, 4 of which go through the hardened steel bumper structure. Ordinary steel drill bits just don't work on this steel, and worse, they drill up. I ended up using a very sharp steel punch and a heavy hammer to pre-punch the steel (after using a small diameter drill to create a shallow groove which I eventually drilled through). Switching to titanium coated bits helped, and the fact that they were 'bullet point' type helped too (the starting point is smaller in diameter than the main crown). I gradually worked my way up, starting at about 3/16 inch and going up a few steps to get to the last 1/2 inch you want. Two holes go straight into the spare tire well, and it's plain sheet steel - not difficult to drill. I highly recommend you do these two **first** - then feel free to use the included bolts/nuts to hold the hitch in place to mark the last 4 holes accurately. Since the steel bumper (which will have those 4 holes) is very hard, you shouldn't go wrong here. But I finally did the holes and after that the installation was easy. I used lots of RTV to seal everything before tightening everything. The instructions said the 'nice' panel covering the back of the spare wheel well should be removed and discarded, but I ended up using a fine-tooth saw. , cut the slots in it and reinstall it in and around the hitch after installation. I think it adds a nice touch and the panel is plastic - very easy to trim. I used the original two bolts (instead of the spare wheel) and just two plastic anchors with push pins (again in the bumper, OEM). I reinstalled the two original pins before installing the hitch as they help hold the plastic bumper cover over the bumper. Without this trim you can easily see the spare tire bin at the rear of the car and I can see why GM created this trim. I just picked it up and marked with a marker where it needed to be cut - the two cuts (more or less) did the trick. It also covers the two clutch bolts (which go into the spare tire compartment), which I like too.
