Review on ๐Ÿ”’ Enhanced Safety with Cardinal Gates Stairway Special Gate in Sleek Black Design by Heather Davis

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Very strong but tricky to assemble

Once the gate is lifted and the latch is set, the gate feels really good - very strong and, depending on how perfectionistic you are with the latch, nice and easy to open. Getting the latch right is the tricky part. The instructions here are very thin. actually not available. The problem is that there is very little tolerance for the position of the part that attaches to the wall that the gate abuts to close the latch. If you have this part too high, the gate will not rise high enough to put the pins in the holes. If you have it too low, the locking mechanism will not close. If it is not vertically aligned with the other side, one of the two pins will not align and it will not close. We're talking about maybe a 1/4 inch margin here, which is very easy to miss when you're doing everything by hand, with parts that move when you try to line them up. I bought two gates and had to align the latch side on both gates multiple times to get it right. and in either case the fit is still not perfect. On some gates they are too low so you really have to press down on the gate to make it click; It's high on the other side, so you'll have to put some upward force on the gate to get it to latch. I'm very hands on and do a lot of things around the house so I imagine if I had problems most people would have problems and some couldn't figure it out. The instructions should at least warn you that there is very little forgiveness in the worldview and ideally provide the best way to ensure you succeed the first time.
