Review on TOM Aquarium Canister and Power Filter Surface Skimmer by Koller Products by Shannon Taylor

Takes patience but does the job well

It takes some patience to get the settings you want, but it does the job well, especially at a low price. Some reviewers complain that the adjuster bolt can get stuck near the end of the adjustment and the stem can break. It's plastic, what can you expect? Before use, run fine steel wool over the threads at the bottom of the tube and flask to reduce sticking. The connecting hose on the gooseneck could be a bit longer for convenience, but as most aquarists have all sorts of spare hoses and hoses available, a little creative pairing of different lengths and sizes will remedy this shortcoming. I tried sticking some filament in the main tube to mechanically trap the organic debris but couldn't get the flow to work properly. Apparently it's not designed to add filter materials inside. So I just resigned myself to flushing the main filter's mechanical filter more frequently when using the skimmer - awkward with canister filters, but I use attachment filters for that reason alone. If you have completely clumsy hands or are impatient, this is not a skimmer for you.
