It's hard but not great *Updated March 7, 2011

I have had many cameras from Olympus in the past but this is my first camera that I have bought from their 'hard' line have. As advertised, this item looks and feels very durable. The seals on it look like they can withstand all kinds of moisture and dust, and the lens has its own protective case and cap to protect it from scratches or damage. The lens also doesn't extend or retract, so dust, sand and dirt can't clog it (a problem I've had before). It also has a minimum of buttons to break or get stuck and a very solid case construction. On a durability scale of 1 to 10, the Stylus Tough 8010 scores 11 points. This camera really is in its class when it comes to durability, and it's the only camera my peers brought to the fight. zones. On the other hand, it looks like Olympus tried to cram everything wrong into this rugged camera. The first thing you'll notice when working with this camera is how slow it is between shots, even with a Class 6 SD card its write speeds seem painfully slow. Don't get me wrong, I'm really happy that Olympus is finally getting rid of the XD card, but it doesn't look like they've fixed their write speed issues. Image quality isn't great either, but that's not a big deal given the small lens they work with. One thing you shouldn't find in the camera is all kinds of photo editing or "beauty" features in the camera. This software does a good job but takes a long time to process. In my opinion, Olympus should leave image processing to the image editing software on the computer and instead focus on making this camera take better pictures with less lag between shots. the world, or even swim with it. But if you're a regular person looking for a camera to take good pictures, then this isn't for you. Instead, buy a cheaper camera with a better lens and get a nice camera case to protect it from everyday life. **Update - I had to send this camera in for warranty repair as it stopped reading my SD card with lag between shots. Repair Olympus gets 5 stars. They replaced the camera board and updated the camera with the latest firmware and shipped it via UPS 2 day shipping the same day they received it. The camera is now faster; It changed from a 3 second lag to about a 2 second lag between frames and it became more responsive when scrolling through menus. I'll take the 33% speed increase, that's still not great, but then again, this is a "rugged camera" so you have to pick your battles. I bought this camera when it first came out and I'm pretty sure that's why it has old firmware. Olympus should be posting this firmware update on their website so anyone can get it without sending their camera in, but I'd say it's worth sending in your camera if you're as frustrated as I am with the delay that's involved. . There is a camera.
