GREENGUARD GOLD = SAFE

READ FIRST: 100% Polyurethane Foam Banned in pre-regulated form since 2004 and not used in these Graco mattresses. Here's a review of that mattress that puts parents off, claiming that it's made of 100% polyurethane foam, which constantly releases toxic chemicals. The same person claims they did a ton of research, but I have to assume they just Googled "100% polyurethane foam" and freaked out. Although this mattress is made from polyurethane foam, it is GREENGUARD GOLD certified, meaning it has been approved for acceptable levels of outgassing by several of the most reputable agencies in the world. This means that in a room where there is little to no ventilation, this mattress will release extremely small levels of chemicals, low enough not to cause anomalies or pose a safety hazard to your child. If you research 100% polyurethane foam you will learn some scary facts about it, but if you also research what it means for a mattress to be GREENGUARD CERTIFIED, extensive testing will be carried out to ensure it is safe. This mattress is not only GREENGUARD certified, but also GREENGUARD GOLD certified, putting it even higher on the list of safe, low-emission foam mattresses. A random person on the internet will convince you that something is not safe when there are amazing scientists and child health advocates who have been researching and improving materials specifically for the safety of our children for over a decade. Now if you want to know about the mattress itself, the one I received took a full FOUR AND A HALF DAYS to fully inflate for us, about a day and a half or so, I was absolutely certain that I would be one of those would losers who got one that just won't inflate all the way no matter what i did. But eventually it ballooned out to its full advertised height/width/thickness. I didn't notice any strange smell either after fully shaking it up or when I first opened it. I think my best advice is to just be patient, even if it takes longer than 48-72 hours. It fits perfectly in my daughter's crib, perfect size. The sheets fit perfectly and she slept well in them. She turns in her sleep and often sleeps on her back, on her stomach, side to side. She seems very comfortable on this mattress and will switch positions without waking up from discomfort. It's great for her and durable enough that I can use it on a newborn with confidence.
