Can't update, can't register.

Reader is fine and all but after I connect it to my PC it just turns it on, can't update because it says the device is not connected. I went into update mode, still nothing. I also tried to register it for the warranty but I am not allowed because according to the website the device should show the password along with the serial number but it only shows the serial number, version number and date.
