I bought this when my stove broke and I found out it would be a few days before I could get the right part. So I used it as the main heat source, not supplemental heat. This heater needed to heat a fairly large area since there are no doors between rooms on my lower floor (about 600-700 square feet). Hours but it warmed up the room well. In fact, I had to turn it off for a while one night because it got too hot. The block itself was pretty quiet and didn't get hot enough to touch. (which was good as my dogs needed to go exploring.) Please note: the temp was in the 30s at the time. I live in a townhouse and am between two other apartments so I have extra insulation but I was very satisfied with how it works. The guest bedroom is always colder than other places in the house and I am sure this will provide a very nice extra warmth.
