It's a little tricky. We are a dedicated BMW workshop and I bought these for our technicians to do a quick test before we have to charge our customers for diagnostic time. We have other diagnostic tools but it takes longer to connect and read. I timed the technician and it took him about 4 minutes to read the codes from opening the door to writing them down using this tool. It reads codes in BMW's proprietary format (not the same as P-codes). However, we found that they were translated from P-codes in the scanner! So you REALLY don't get BMW codes. I know this because we hooked up our $15,000 BMW AutoLogic tool and got different codes (which helped us fix the car faster) and they weren't the same. You'll probably find a translated P-codes repair solution at some point, but it's no better than any other OBDII scan tool. Our AutoLogic and BMW 3GIO tools extract identical BMW codes, but this tool does not.
