If you're planning on replacing a drive, first make sure you do your research! You need to make sure you buy the right disc for your PS3. It took me a while to find the right one, but google is your friend. Just look up the model number on your PS3 and you can find the right disc. I had to buy two drives before it worked. I bought from another seller first because they were a bit cheaper. The item looked new but I noticed the seal on the box was broken before opening it myself so I was a bit wary of a replacement. After going through the installation process, I ran it and found that it didn't work. I was very lucky that it didn't eat any of my discs that I put in to test, but it made a terrible sound and just didn't do what it was supposed to and didn't play anything. I sent it back via Revain promptly. The second time I made sure I bought the device from Nextek. However, there were some differences in the drive. The first drive I received from another seller came with everything including a metal case. Nextek's drive comes without a metal case, but you don't need it as it should be on the failed drive. If you want a metal case you'll have to buy it from another seller, but I don't see why you should do that unless you totally screwed it up trying to get it. If so, then you probably shouldn't be replacing it yourself! Nextek had a link to their website on how to replace the drive. While this may seem helpful, the link is outdated. They still go to their website and it's easy enough to find installation instructions, but the only complaint here is that they have to update their stuff, which they ship with the new disc. Easy enough. Anyway, the instructions on the internet are good enough. If you're not too comfortable there is a great YouTube video called "PS3SLIM CECH 2002x 120GB Blu Ray Drive" which I also highly recommend. This is for the drive I had and should give you the confidence to replace your drive. However, if you're buying a Nextek replacement, remember that you'll have to keep the metal case and transfer the circuit board to the new drive. It's not difficult, but it will take some time the first time. Wherever you buy it, it should come with the Torx T8 screwdriver needed to remove the circuit board from the front of the PS3. You will also need a small 0 and 00 Philips screwdriver to pry everything out. As soon as I plugged this new drive in, everything immediately lit up and I'm glad to get it back. Nextek. That worked great for me.
