Review on Soundbar YAMAHA YAS-107 by Mateusz Biakowski ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I'm impressed! Exactly the product deserves your attention.

This soundbar is perfect for a small room where it is not possible to properly place a good 5.1 speaker system. In such a room, the sound from this model will really be "enveloping", as one of the authors of the reviews aptly put it, and surprisingly quite voluminous. Yes, yes, this is not the miracle volume that you read about on audio connoisseur forums. Also, you (like me at the time of choice) will read there that YAS-107 is money thrown away and it is better not to buy anything than "this". However, I would not say that everything is so sad, given the price of the device and its purpose. Yes, DTS Virtual:X technology does not provide virtual speakers on the ceiling, but compared to ordinary inexpensive 2.1 speakers with a subwoofer (and even more so compared to TV speakers), you will get a much richer sound picture, no doubt. Now Yamaha has a YAS-108 device on the way. But if a slightly more compact size and the ability to forward not only video from HDR, but also from HLG are not important to you, feel free to take the YAS-107. I will be happy to answer questions about the device.

Pros
  • Relative compactness, high-quality sound, HDMI-in and output version 2.0 with the ability to pass-through 4K HDR output at all possible frequencies, the ability to directly forward sound from an external connected device, HDMI CEC control, long-range Bluetooth, unobtrusive LEDs and the ability to control from your phone. By the way, when the device is in sleep mode, it still displays the video from the set-top box to the TV screen, which was a pleasant surprise. I was also worried about the moment from the reviews on other soundbars - the ability to connect to bluetooth from the neighbors. There are no settings for this in this model, but the bluetooth connection is implemented in such a way that the neighbors must be superagents in order to connect to you.
Cons
  • Controversial solution with Bluetooth control. It is clear that wi-fi and related chips are the lot of more expensive models, but this results in some imbalance of the device. Let me explain: at the time of choosing a soundbar (summer 2022), YAS-107 is the only model on the 2022 market in the range up to 25, which has an HDMI 2.0 input and output with the possibility of a 4K pass-through transfer with HDR, both DD and DTS decoders. At the same time, more expensive models from the same Yamaha do not have such functionality. However, all control in the YAS-107 is implemented via a Bluetooth channel, which, with the advantages described above, looks like a relative anachronism. The poor number of settings in the mobile application is explained by the fact that this device is at the lowest level in its class and it implements the minimum number of functions, but still I would like a little more settings options. Well, as expected, the bass "does not pump". Those who like deep low frequencies should definitely buy a separate subwoofer. I'm not a big fan of "boom-boom" and trembling walls, but I understand that for many this is an important factor when buying. Also, to get the ideal sound for a particular task, you need to switch the settings. For example, I did not like listening to music in the "Music" mode, and even more so in the surround sound mode.
