Review on πŸ”§ Stens 751-045 Ring Compressor Kit: Multi-Purpose and Performance Enhancing Tool by Craig Walters

So simple, even a Neanderthal could do it

I bought this because I thought it was a silly way to put a piston in a cylinder with rings. At heart I'm a fan of metal and chrome... plastic? YOU'RE WELCOME! OK, first of all, I was WRONG. The flexibility and resilience of plastic compression rings are ideal. Once I've snapped the rings onto the pistons (reminder: 2-stroke pistons usually have a guide pin, the gap in the ring goes there AND it doesn't matter which side of the ring is up...the top of the piston). A common mistake that most inexperienced engine rebuilders make is installing the rings upside down. When that happens they will never let the cylinder slide over the piston... (voice of experience). Pre-lube every surface (including the roller bearing and crank main bearings so they don't cause extra wear during reassembly). And at the first start. Step 1: Put a funny rectangular thing with a slot in it (piston stabilizer bar) on top of the connecting rod and under the crown of the piston. Then turn the engine flywheel until the piston rests on the top of the piston sized for your piston (up to 60mm) and wipe with a lint free cloth, smear some oil on the inside, press around the top of the piston and push the rings into their grooves. Step 3: Take the cylinder assembly (if it's a Husqvarna 395XP, install the carburetor before doing this, this is very important in later steps), align the base of the cylinder with the piston and slide it slowly over the piston when you do this Do not align the cylinder, you will hear a click. uh and jingle as the ring slips out of the slot...DO NOT STRIKE! If this happens and you see the ring sticking out of the slots in the piston, STOP. Remove the cylinder and start with step 1. The guide is slippery enough but firm enough to push the piston down while you push the cylinder and check the rings. Would I buy this again? YES, is that a good deal? damn yes

Cons
  • Not bad, but...
