I bought the largest possible size and am glad I did. I'm not sure what the usefulness of anything is, just the size of a litter box as the cat's paws have to walk on the mat for it to grab the litter box, so choose a larger one. The crate is about 8-12 inches on all 3 sides (just enough for all 4 paws to walk over when she comes out of the crate) and the amount of litter on my floors easily reduces by 3/4 or more (the kitty used to run around the house and find litter on the bed, now it's confined to the box's immediate territory). My vacuum cleaner glides easily on the mat, making it easy to clean. The only minor complaint I have is that the edges of the rug are "curled" instead of lying perfectly flat.
