Disappointed that the camera is not held in a vertical position

I have been using the SLIK tripod for 35 years and have never had a problem with it. Unfortunately, someone recently knocked it over and broke their head. I wanted a 3-way head again, but the new heads have two handles (I only had one) so I bought this compact SLIK SBH-120 DQ ball head. It works well with my Nikon D90 in landscape mode. However, when I rotate the camera to take vertical shots, the camera slides off the cork pad and rotates downward. I'm very disappointed and will now have to buy a matching triangular head.
