Dark cherry wood. The part on which the mug is placed is made of black felt or microsuede. I don't know how to describe it. Durable, won't slip or move when using the included mat. However, I used a small extra piece of the same material I already had because I wasn't sure if the tape that's on the non-slip material could end up on the fabric of the sofa. I don't know how dangerous that can be if you have violent kids or pets. Lol goes well with the big flat armrests we have on the couch. I can't speak for round hands. Big enough for a large cup or mug and maybe a small remote control. Small enough that I can still rest my hand on the arm of the couch or set pillows in the corner and it's not in the way. get up to get to the coffee table. :)
